The need
More than 1 billion human beings - that is one person in six - have no choice but to use potentially harmful sources of water. Considerably more have inadequate access to water, struggling each day to meet their basic water needs. The consequence of insufficient water is a bleak future for the billions of people locked in a cycle of poverty and disease. The problem does not lie within the available technologies or water sources itself, but the ability to use them. In many areas groundwater levels are very deep, which makes in too expensive to use groundwater as water supply. In other areas, the groundwater is contaminated with minerals and chemicals due the composition of geological aquifers. There are many areas in this world, where most technologies or water sources are inadequate to solve the water shortage. What can be done in these areas?
